WHHC Volunteer Bernard Altman
WHHC Tasks and Responsibilities
My name is Bernard Altman, I am also known as "Bernie". I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I went to a Vocational High School for four years to become an electrician and graduated in 1967. Right after graduation I enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 17. I met my wife at my first duty station in California and we got married right before I was shipped out to Vietnam. I was stationed at Bien Hoa Air Force Base also nicknamed "Rocket Alley" due to the everyday rocket and mortar attacks on our base. While in Vietnam my first child was born, after 4 years of military service my wife gave birth to our second child and we moved to Toms River, New Jersey where I worked for the DOD for the next 28 years in Research and Development on satellite communications.
I was chosen by WHHC back in 2022 to attend one of the hunting trips they were offering, and they flew me from Florida to Pennsylvania where I enjoyed a 3-day turkey hunt on the Kelley Farm. After I left the military I began having various health issues and the only thing I found to alleviate my ailments was to be in the outdoors pursuing wild game. After that WHHC hunt I joined the WHHC team and now enjoy giving back to those like me who need to be in the outdoors to heal from the many wounds of combat we have all experienced.
